Safety first - watch out above around power lines

The Lines Company (TLC) is reminding contractors, farmers and rural communities to look up and keep clear of overhead power lines, following recent incidents involving agricultural equipment coming too close to the network.

TLC has received reports of bales being stacked underneath power lines, increasing the risk of contact — particularly when people climb on them or machinery is operating nearby.

“When it comes to electrical safety, there is no room for error,” says Simon Batters, General Manager People and Safety. “You don’t have to touch a power line to be seriously injured or killed. Electricity can jump from lines to nearby equipment or objects.”

Nearly every worksite has overhead lines, and TLC is urging everyone working near the network to:

• Stay at least four metres away from overhead power lines
• Avoid storing materials underneath or near lines
• Treat all downed lines as live
• Stop work if there is any doubt

If equipment comes into contact with a power line, keep well clear. Operators should stay inside the vehicle and call TLC immediately.

“Our priority is simple — ensuring everyone makes it home safely to their whānau,” said Batters.
