Power it Forward:  Community backs solar-powered future for Ōtorohanga Kiwi House

2 March 2026

The Ōtorohanga Kiwi House (OKH) and The Lines Company (TLC) are celebrating strong early support for their Power it Forward: Kiwi House Edition solar sponsorship initiative, with around 50 percent of the solar panels already sponsored — and installations underway soon.

The initiative brings together conservation, community and clean energy, helping future‑proof one of the King Country’s most loved wildlife attractions while also supporting households on TLC’s electricity network who are struggling with power bills.

The Ōtorohanga Kiwi House is much more than a tourist destination. It’s a conservation and education hub, famous for its unique nocturnal kiwi experience and its role in connecting people with New Zealand’s native wildlife. Through this partnership, it’s also becoming a beacon of sustainability.

“Under our Power it Forward initiative, TLC is funding the solar hardware, while businesses, clubs, families and individuals are invited to sponsor the installation of panels on the Kiwi House buildings,” said Kyle Barnes, TLC’s Community and Innovation General Manager. “For TLC, this Power it Forward initiative isn’t just about solar panels. Excess energy from the panels will go back to TLC and we will gift this electricity to local whānau who are struggling with power bills.”

“With around half the panels already sponsored, it’s clear our community believes in this project,” said Kim Ingham, Chair of the ŌKH Charitable Trust. “There’s still time for people and businesses to get involved and be part of something that delivers real, local impact — for conservation, for sustainability and for people who need a little extra support.”

Each panel sponsored helps power conservation efforts and keeps the lights on at the Kiwi House.

Sponsorship options range from individual panel sponsorships, starting at $300 per panel, through to full building sponsorships for key stakeholders. All sponsors will be publicly recognised at the Kiwi House, creating a lasting connection between contributors and this iconic local attraction.

Installations are kicking off soon, marking an exciting new phase for the project and bringing the vision of a solar‑powered Kiwi House closer to reality. Once complete, the solar system will support the Kiwi House’s long‑term operational sustainability while contributing to TLC’s broader focus on energy wellbeing and community resilience.

“This is about more than solar panels,” said Mike Fox, TLC’s Chief Executive. “It’s about genuine partnership, shared values and making a difference where it matters most — right here in our communities.”

There is still time for individuals and businesses to sponsor a panel and be part of this feel‑good local success story. Every panel sponsored helps power the Kiwi House today, support a more sustainable future and care for people and communities.
