From trainee tools to leading the network

The energy sector is proving to be one of the most rewarding and future‑focused places to build a career — particularly for young people who want to earn well, stay local and make a real difference in their communities.

That’s the message from Jordan Hughes, Southern Area Manager at The Lines Company (TLC), whose own journey shows what’s possible with the right attitude and support. Starting straight out of school as a trainee line mechanic, Jordan has progressed from the tools to leading TLC’s southern network within a decade.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was finishing school,” says Jordan. “I came into TLC with no prior study — just a good attitude and a willingness to learn. Everything else, you learn on the job.”

Jordan’s story reflects a broader truth about the energy sector: it is an interesting, vibrant industry that is actively seeking motivated people. With energy infrastructure underpinning every home, business and community, the work is varied, meaningful and essential.

“At first, the appeal was having a secure, local job and not needing to leave home,” Jordan says. “Now, it’s about the impact — what we do affects every part of the community. Everyone needs power.”
