Planned Power Outage in Ohakune & surrounding areas – Sunday 6 April 2025
17 March 2025
The Lines Company (TLC) advises customers in Ohakune and surrounding areas of a planned power outage due to scheduled maintenance being performed by Transpower, the owners and operators of the national grid.
Transpower has seven smaller substation sites around the country that require annual routine maintenance. This work cannot be done with the power on. These are great places to live in New Zealand, but in the same way as they don’t have many of the features of larger towns and cities such as commercial airports and four-lane motorways, they also don’t have more than one electricity transmission line or transformer which can provide back-up supply during maintenance.
The outage will take place on Sunday 6 April 2025, from 9am to 4pm and will affect 2,166 customers across multiple locations in the Ruapehu district. This outage is necessary to allow essential maintenance work to be completed safely.
Please treat all wires as live during the outage.

How to prepare for an outage
We understand that power outages can be inconvenient and disruptive. To lessen the impact, we encourage affected customers to plan ahead:
- Charge phones, laptops and backup power supplies in advance.
- Have a good supply of water and non-perishable food.
- Ensure you have alternative lighting such as torches or battery-operated lamps.
- Keep your fridge and freezer doors closed to retain cold air.
