TLC general manager – service delivery, Jared Murrell.

TLC swamped with applications

22 April 2024

Winning a spot in New Zealand’s top line mechanic crews is proving to be tough.

The Lines Company (TLC) is recruiting three trainee line mechanics to join its award-winning lines crew based in Te Kūiti. But candidates are facing tough competition with 78 people applying for just three spots available.

General manager – service delivery Jared Murrell said the company was whittling down applicants, but it wasn’t easy.

“We’ve had some really fantastic people apply – from school leavers right through to qualified tradies.  People know it’s a great job, working in their own community and with no two days the same,” Murrell said.

“Plus, at the end of your training, you come out of it with really valuable national qualifications.  We’re stoked with the number of great applications we’ve had; it reflects really well on our community and on the company as well.  Our crews have got a really good reputation for doing the hard mahi when it counts, and people see that.”

TLC had strongly encouraged applications from locals, using traditional advertising as well as social media to get the word out.  More than 4,500 people saw the recruitment ads via social media alone.

The company was now in the process of short-listing applicants before putting them through some practical tests.  Applications have now closed with final appointments likely to be made next month.
