Bigger transformer boosts customer supply

Lake side areas north of Tūrangi from Motuoapa to Motutere point are now running off a larger more powerful transformer, boosting electrical supply to local customers.
“Previously the area was fed by a 2.5MVA transformer situated in Kiko Road,” said Project Manager Steven Stables. “We have replaced this with a refurbished 3MVA transformer as part of our planned work programme to improve reliability of supply for our customers and cater for growth and peak demand.
“The size of any transformer dictates how much power the transformer can handle,” explained Stables. “The smaller transformer has struggled with increased population, especially over public holidays with more use from tourists.”
By upgrading the capacity, we extend the life of equipment and ensure we keep the lights on.
This project follows a transformer upgrade at the Arohena Substation where we recently installed a new 5MVA transformer, again to make supply more reliable for communities.
TLC works smartly to get the most from our assets, repairing and refurbishing where feasible and budgeting new for replacement, depending on the demand and growth areas.
