We are the Company that looks after the power line network in the North Island's 'King Country' region of New Zealand.

Our area covers 13,700 km2 and is the largest network area in New Zealand which doesn’t have a major urban centre. This makes us specialists in providing power to out of the way places, including to the highest points in the North Island of New Zealand (the Turoa and Whakapapa skifields on Mount Ruapehu).

The Lines Company area map As well as keeping power flowing to your home or business, we also provide a full electrical contracting service

Owned by the Waitomo Services and King Country Power Customer Trusts, we came into existence on April 1 1999, as a result of the Government’s electricity industry reforms.

At that time we took over the former King Country Energy (KCE) network, while KCE purchased our two power stations and retail customer base.

Our head office is in Te Kuiti, but we also have a physical presence in Otorohanga, Taumarunui, Turangi, Ohakune, and Mangakino.

We have around 20,000 customers, including domestic consumers and holiday home owners through to major industries like NZ Steel and McDonald's Lime.

POWER SURGE PROTECTION A MUST
Spike protectors on your switchboard or appliances are a must for those who live in technology driven homes and businesses. Teenage infatuations with the latest mobiles with change-out fashion face plates and multiple ring tones can turn quickly to tears if a power surge occurs while their latest yuppie toy is plugged into a charger.

LOCAL GENERATION GROWING
One of the benefits of the King Country is its abundance of local energy resource. Currently over 32% of the kwhrs used by our local customers is generated locally and this figure is set to expand in the next few years as King Country Energy and other generators, some of them local private operations, bring new projects to fruition.

THE LINES COMPANY AIMS TO REDUCE OUTAGES
Customers in the King Country have traditionally suffered a relatively high number of power outages. This is primarily due to the rugged terrain that our lines cross, the adverse weather they are exposed to and trees that fall into the lines.

CONFUSED 0800
Mighty River Power (0800 4 faults) and The Lines Company (0800 for faults) have very similar 0800 fault numbers and share the same after hours service. Some confusion has arisen from this, as the Mighty River Power number does not have information on The Lines Company’s faults. For fault information The Lines Company can be reached on: 0800 FOR FAULTS
